Destination Wedding at Finest Playa Mujeres

One thing about me is that I absolutely love to travel. When Amy and Jamie reached out about having me fly down to Mexico to create live guest sketches at their destination wedding, I was 100% on board! It was such a fun weekend filled with love and laughter in paradise! I’m so glad to share their incredible day with you.

Amy and Jamie’s Mexico Destination Wedding

Amy and Jamie knew from the start that they wanted a destination wedding in Mexico. Their blended family includes six kids (three from each side), and they’ve visited this resort on their family vacations. Between their love of the beach and the sentimental value the area holds, it was a no-brainer that they should say their vows here! They decided on Finest Playa Mujeres thanks to an amazing past visit, and I think they made a fantastic choice.  I absolutely LOVED this resort, and it would be amazing to go back one day.

The entire weekend was so beautiful. The resort itself was incredible, with delicious drinks, friendly staff, and gorgeous beach views. I truly felt like I was in paradise! Amy and Jamie started the weekend with an all-white welcome party, which was so much fun. I attended as a guest, and since they wanted to keep my illustrations a surprise until the wedding, I spent the evening chatting with guests who began taking guesses at my role! Many guessed dancing or singing, but they were pleasantly surprised to find out my real contribution to the wedding!

Personal Touches

When planning their intimate destination wedding, Amy and Jamie knew they wanted to really personalize their wedding day. Even the smallest details were customized and well thought-out. Guests were welcomed to the resort with custom luggage tags, and custom shotglasses filled with tequila served as the escort cards! One of my favorite details was the cocktail napkins with their text conversations printed on them. And of course, I created a sketch of each guests’ outfit which served as both a fun activity and a wedding favor.

Live Illustration with SamiaLynn Designs

Jamie and Amy hired me for four hours of custom sketching, which was the perfect amount of time for their intimate wedding. They opted for hand-drawn sketches over digital illustrations, which always adds a fun personal flair. It was such a great day at Finest Playa Mujeres, and I’m so glad I got to enjoy it with them!

If you’re planning a destination wedding and want a unique, custom experience for your guests, let’s chat! I absolutely love visiting new places with my couples, and I would thrilled to be a part of your big day.

Wedding Band vs DJ: Which Is Right For You?
illustration of a wedding band singer and guitar player with a drum set in the background

Wedding music sets the tone of your wedding day, especially the reception. Whether you opt for oldies, the latest hits, or everything in between – music is a critical part of your wedding day. So, who do you entrust with this important task? As a live wedding illustrator, I’ve attended dozens of weddings with both bands and DJs and have seen the pros and cons of both. Music is incredibly personal, so it’s important to sit down with your partner and figure out your top priorities. While you can’t go wrong with either vendor, here are a few tips to keep in mind while making your decision.

Live Wedding Bands

Having a live band at your wedding is a super fun luxury experience. If you love concerts, what better way to bring that vibe to your wedding day than with live music? Live bands are great at bringing upbeat energy to a wedding reception. However, with so many musicians involved, bands are a much more expensive entertainment choice than a DJ. In addition to paying all of the musicians for their time, you may also need to rent a stage and will have more vendor meals to pay for. Live bands cost, on average, around $2,400 more than a DJ, and that price can significantly vary based on region and experience. Overall, if you have the budget and want to prioritize a high-energy, interactive experience, a band is a great option.

Wedding DJs

DJs are a classic wedding entertainment choice and for a good reason! A DJ has an endless library of music right at their fingertips. Good DJs are also trained to read a room, so they can adjust the music based on what you and your guests are enjoying most. Most DJs will double as emcees, making any necessary announcements during the reception, like parent dances and cake cutting. Since DJs usually work alone, they tend to be quite affordable. If you love dancing to the latest hits or simply just want to listen to the original versions of your favorite songs, a DJ might be the right choice for you.

Wedding Music Playlist

In the age of Spotify and Apple Music, couples have been questioning: Do I really need to hire someone to play music at my wedding? The answer is yes! While to an outsider, it may seem like you could just make a playlist and hit play, there is so much more that goes into your wedding day music and sound engineering. First, your music vendor provides all their own equipment that you would then need to rent, including microphones and speakers. You’d need to know how to properly set them up, have time to soundcheck, and have someone on hand who could step in to fix it if there were any issues. You’d also need someone to serve as an emcee.

While you may think that a friend or family member could handle this job, unless they are very used to speaking publicly, it’s better to leave this to the professionals. And finally, I don’t recommend using a playlist on your wedding day because you need someone there who can think on their feet. Any wedding vendor will tell you that weddings rarely go 100% according to plan. So when cocktail hour runs a little long, or your parent dances get moved up in the day, you will need someone there who can adjust the music accordingly. Just like any other wedding vendor, band members and DJs are trained professionals who will make your wedding day run smoother without you even knowing.

East Coast Wedding Music

As a live wedding illustrator, I’m fortunate enough to experience weddings up and down the East Coast with a variety of wedding music vendors. In Washington, DC, I always look forward to working with DJ Chris Laich or getting to experience live music by SoundConnection. When I’m up in Boston, DJ Matt Toto and DJ Valentina are my absolute favorites! It’s always a joy to illustrate wedding guests to the sound of their music. If you’re planning an East Coast wedding with an incredible music team and you want some gorgeous illustrations to go with it, reach out to see if your wedding date is available!

Ideas for your Wedding Send-Off

When working with my wedding coordinator he told me that one of the most forgotten wedding details is your send off. So to save you the headache close to the wedding, I wanted to share some ideas now to help make the decision easier. I also wanted to make sure there are ideas here for every budget because the priority you put on this detail of the wedding is totally up to you!

  1. the tradition alternate

In every class movie wedding scene, you see people throwing rice. However, we’ve learned that rice can’t actually be digested by birds and other creatures so might we suggest bird seed? Same granular idea as rice, but nice to the wildlife.

2. other things to throw

These are all fun ways to create an arch around you and your new spouse as you run between your guests. Any of these will create such great photos with an almost halo effect. For this you will just have to make sure to have plenty of whatever you choose for each guest:

  • Bubbles

  • Flower petals, dried florals, or leaves

  • Confetti (or confetti canons)*

  • Streamer poppers

  • Glitter* or sequins

  • Paper planes

*Be sure to get the biodegradable version!

3. Things to hold

Much like the above suggestions, these ideas get your guests interacting with your exit. However, these are the objects they will be holding on to and NOT throwing:

  • Flags (either custom with your initials/monogram or maybe the countries you’re from if you’re international)

  • Glow sticks

  • Ribbon wands

  • Bells

  • Sparklers (your planner will NOT be happy about this idea as drunk people + fire = usually not great things, but you need to know your options)

4. The release

Probably the most unique suggestion on the list: butterflies! Butterflies symbolize new beginnings and happiness.

5. Transportation

If you want exit photos that will really make a statement, rent a vintage car to have waiting out in front of your venue or (if you’re on the water) rent a boat! These are exits that you can also mix with ideas 1-3 to create a very memorable experience!

6. The party bus

Piggy-backing off the point above: For my recent wedding we bussed all of the guests back and forth from the hotel to the venue because we were in the backroads of Kentucky and I wanted a PARTY. There were 2 trips back and forth before the ceremony, and as many trips as needed for people wanting to leave anytime after the ceremony. The last bus left when the reception was over and that was the party bus! Everyone got on and my husband and I were the last people to get on this bus. That moment is one of my many favorite memories of the night! From there one group of people got dropped off at the hotel and the rest of us were dropped off at a bar downtown where we continued to dance the night away. I highly recommend this “exit” if you are wanting a fun way to continue the night with your people.

7. The show

Give your guests a last minute “wow” moment with fireworks, a light show, or air show (this one would have to be done in the daytime)! Just be sure to check with your venue first to make sure it’s permitted.

8. The irish exit

The introvert’s dream exit… leave without telling anyone! If you are already a little uneasy about all of the attention you are going to get for the ceremony, first dances, and speeches, feel free to sneak away whenever you are done. You are the couple, you make the rules!

One thing to remember is that from my experience (and hearing photographer’s recommendation), if you are wanting photos of your grand exit you are going to have to fake this exit before the end of the reception. Most photographers do not stay until the end of the night because there are only so many photos you want to pay for of your sweaty drunk cousin on the dance floor. It’s totally normal to gather everyone together during the party to take exit photos.

Which grand exit are you planning to do for your wedding?

Incorporating Art into Your Wedding

Hello! Sam here 👋🏼 . As your resident artist, I’m super excited to bring this topic to you so let’s chat beautiful options for your big day!

As we’re all aware, art comes in many styles. This can be more traditional like painting or in the form of food decoration or photography. Whichever is your preferred medium, art is a beautiful way to show self expression and style. Also, as more and more weddings focus on guest experience, this is great way to get creative and wow your guests. So let’s dive in to a few specific ideas:

  1. hire a live painter

This is the most obvious idea, as it concentrates on the traditional idea of “art”. You can hire an artist to come to the wedding and paint a scene from the ceremony, first dance, etc. They usually spend a few hours on it on site and then will finish it up back home in their studio. This is the perfect blend of a memento (for you as the couple) and experience as guests will love seeing this come to life throughout the night.

Option number two, is a live guest artist. This is what I personally specialize in and guests absolutely LOVE walking away with a custom piece of art created just for them. I have an entire blog post going over how all of this works, so check that out here.

2. custom place cards

Piggy-backing off of the point above, getting custom place “cards” for your guests is another way to gift them something personal. I would say this is a better option for the rehearsal dinner or welcome party as opposed to the wedding, but that really depends on your guest count and budget. These cards or place settings can be anything from custom sketches to mini embroidered hoops to personalized letters. I personally love this option as it acts as the wedding favor as well instead of gifting something generic that they don’t want anyway.

3. Interactive guest book

I will scream this from the rooftops for the rest of eternity: SKIP THE TRADITIONAL GUEST BOOK. The likeliness of you reading it ever again after (maybe) your first anniversary is very low. So, why not have an option that you’ll actually be able to see and admire after the wedding day? Guest “book” ideas can honestly be giving people anything they can write on, but if you want to be able to display this with pride in your home afterwards, signing art is going to be the way to go. Such as: a custom illustration of the two of you with (or without) your date underneath on canvas or oversized paper with plenty of space for guests to sign around it (click here to learn more about this). Or even something special carved out of wood or etched on glass.

We also did a blog post on the many guest book alternatives. Click here to look into more options.

4. portrait photographer

This is a very new option that I am SO excited is starting to trend. Imagine instead of a photo-booth, you had an actual photographer taking family/couples photos in that cute little sitting/backdrop area you already know you’re going to have somewhere (or at cocktail hour!). Because there’s nothing like a professional making sure you look best in photos. Plus, the photographer would gather guests’ info to send them the photos post-wedding. Wins all around.

5. Get literal

For all my fellow creatives, this one’s for you. If you want a little nod to your artsy side, here’s a couple options:

  1. Mini easels and canvases as table numbers

  2. Pantone cards for your seating chart (or table numbers)

  3. Hand-painted veil or dress/outfit

  4. Grazing table with food on (unused!) paint palettes

6. Painted food

Don’t worry, it’s still edible! If you want a more “temporary” art direction then go for the cake. Watercolor cakes are absolutely gorgeous and can really bring a non-traditional, romantic vibe to the dessert selection. Not having a cake cutting moment? Get famous paintings replicated on a bunch of mini cakes!

7. get it on paper

When all ideas fail, you really can go all out relying on your paper goods. It’s a great way to kick off your wedding journey as the invite suite will be guests’ first peak into your style. Here’s a few options:

  1. Get an illustrated map to introduce guests to your area for the weekend (especially if your weekend activities are split between multiple venues)

  2. A watercolor or pencil drawing of your venue for the envelope lining

  3. An illustration of the couple for the save the dates or thank you notes

  4. Food illustrations for a buffet sign or individual menus

  5. A custom drink sign for your signature cocktails

  6. Chocolate cards aka a delicious chocolate bar inside a custom decorated card aka the sweetest take home favor for your guests. Shoot me an email to learn more and get a quote!

As I usually end most of my blog posts, I love reminding you that your special weekend or day is just that: YOURS. So make it as unique as your love with your partner and let your personality shine through art. I would love to know, which idea did you like best? Tell us in the comments below!

Happy Planning!

Wedding Details for Each Personality

Weddings are that special day (or weekend, or..week?) that you can really have your personality as individuals, and a couple, shine through. There are so many special touches you can add to any aspect of the events to wow your guests and have them saying “oh that’s SO them”. From the invites to the food to the reception entertainment, there’s a million options and sometimes, it’s the little things that make the difference.

So how do you decide? Let’s break these ideas down by personality or traits:

The foodie

Splurge on a 7 course meal or specialty food stations for a buffet. Bonus points for corresponding wine or drinks! I attended a wedding at a guest with a multi-course dinner and I can confirm it was the best thing ever. Need wine pairing recs? We go over all of this in a blog post! Click here to check it out.

The Fashionable One

Pretend like you didn’t see this one coming: live guest illustrations! Photos are always nice, but custom art as favors is the icing on the fashion cake. Click here to learn more about live sketching.

The Influencer

Hire a content creator! It’s a great way to get all your phone coverage for you to post later, without having to worry about it on your big day. Have more questions about content creators? We have a blog post about that too, just click here to read.

The Boozy One

Cocktail hour idea: have a tasting! Wine, liquor, beer, whatever goes with your food or wedding theme. This idea also works great for a welcome party if you’d prefer a smaller crowd.

The "Extra" One

Go all in on a grand entrance or exit (forget the sparklers or confetti). Arrive in a carriage, leave in a boat, skydive into the ceremony, use a smoke machine down the aisle, pick your “extra” level and go for it. Or take a page out of the Southeast Asian wedding book and arrive on a horse or elephant (but be sure to check with your venue first).

The Kid at Heart

Two words for you: Bounce House. Yes, wedding bouncy houses are a thing and they look SO FUN. They come in all white and you can add extra florals around it for a special touch!

The Fearless One

Another trend that I’ve been seeing around: tattoo artists. We’re talking real, permanent actual tattoos. This idea is obviously for a very specific type of couple, but maybe you can add a temp tattoo station for those guests who…aren’t quite as adventurous?

The Eco Enthusiast

Nothing drives crazy a green movement follower more than being wasteful; and from that standpoint, yes, weddings can produce a LOT of waste. So why not cut down on that a bit? I’ll list a few ideas below, but the one I think is the most innovative is “seed paper”. Paper made out of actual seeds so you can plant and water them when you go home and look at that your place card turned into tulips. Here’s more:

  • “Paperless Post” save the dates (honestly, this is just easier for everyone)

  • Use local blooms

  • Reuse said blooms from the ceremony and bouquets into the receptions space

  • Pick a menu with seasonal, local ingredients

  • Rent, borrow, or thrift outfits, linens, and decor

  • Use biodegradable confetti or balloons

  • Hire a bus or shuttle for transportation to and from the venue

  • Plant a tree for your unity ceremony

The Dancer

This is fun for both you and your guests because everyone knows you’ll probably have the best music for the dance floor. But aside from that, why not do a choreographed dance with your new spouse? Or during parent dances. If you don’t want to do it yourself (or are unable), hire professionals! Guests will love the dinner entertainment. Take it a step further and get dancers that relate to your cultural background.

The Traveler

As an avid traveler myself, I LOVE this as a theme. Plus, there are a ton of ways to do it:

  • Make your invite suit into a passport with boarding passes

  • Create your table numbers based off all the places you’ve traveled together

  • Make a map as your escort wall

  • Use an atlas and polaroid photos for your guest book

  • Thrift vintage trunks and globes as decor

  • Speaking of globes, get a minimalistic or chalkboard one and use as a guest book

Which of these do you identify with the most?

Let us know in the comments below what special touches you added to your wedding! We’d love to hear from you.

5 Fun Bachelorette Theme Ideas

Every bachelorette party is different, but the concept of a girls weekend never gets old. Picking a party theme has many uses including making packing easier for everyone attending, keeping the group together while out, and of course you can't forget how good the Instagram posts will look while everyone is dressed on theme! If you need inspiration for your bachelorette party, we've got you covered with a few ideas:

Last disco

Who doesn't love a disco ball right now? This is a fun excuse to dress in all of the sparkles and flared pants you can find! On trend right now: “Disco cowgirl”. Just add a cowboy hat and/or boots, maybe a little fringe, with your sparkle and you’re good to go!

Locations suggestions: NYC, Vegas, Nashville, Austin, LA

Final Sail Before the Veil

Having a girls day on a boat somewhere for your bachelorette? This is the perfect time to wear your nautical blues and whites while pretending you know how to sail the blue seas (or maybe you’re one of those cool people that actually do)

Locations suggestions: Miami or Key West, Cape Cod, San Diego, the Hamptons, Martha’s Vineyard

Hoedown Throwdown

Hannah Montana anyone (or Shania Twain for my true 90’s babes)?? Go line dancing with your girls, but not before turning your jean shorts into Daisy Dukes! Don't forget your flannel to keep you warm on the late night out

Locations suggestions: Nashville, Dallas, Charleston, San Antonio

Roaring 20’s

A personal favorite. Pull out some fringe and drink the bathtub gin or moonshine before heading to a speakeasy for the night. This works best for a bride in her 20s excited to take the next step in life (marriage!)

Locations suggestions: NYC, New Orleans, LA, Boston

Boho Bach Bash

If the bride searched for "different, unique, or boho” wedding dresses, then this is the theme for you.  Each person can decide on their own personal version of boho and run with it for the weekend

Locations suggestions: Palm Springs, Scottsdale, LA, Savannah

No matter where you choose (or whether you’re doing one night vs a weekend), just make sure to have your favorite people with you and you’ll have the time of your life. What bachelorette theme will you be using for your wedding?

Hiring a Live Illustrator for your Wedding or Event

Wedding entertainment can be as elaborate or as simple as you want to make it and can come in many forms. For most people, they want their big day to have unique elements that their guests will enjoy. I mean, the whole purpose of booking entertainment is for your guests right?

My particular service is illustrating live and I’ve been doing it since 2018. I’ve had couples reach out with many of the same questions about hiring a live artist so I’m going to answer them all below!

  1. What is live illustration?

A live illustrator or artist is someone that comes to the venue itself and creates artwork on the spot. Depending on the artist, this can come in many mediums such as painting, charcoal, markers, or more and can be done on canvas, paper, or products. Everyone’s process is different so be sure to do a deep dive into your artist’s work and offering before putting down a deposit.

2. Who is the illustration made for?

There’s 2 different options: individual sketches for the guests, or one big illustration for the couple/client. Guest illustrations are usually done quickly within minutes (varies from artist to artist) while one big piece is done for the couple to take home at the end of the night, or shipped to them post-wedding. If this is a corporate event, some clients like to have a full scene done to commemorate a venue or special date.

Note: some couples choose to have both! A piece for them and sketches for their guests. This option, of course, requires 2 artists.

3. What’s the difference between digital and paper?

Paper sketches are exactly how it sounds: illustrations drawn on paper with markers/pens/pencils (or whatever medium that artist uses). I use 5x7” (13 x 18 cm) paper and put them in plastic protectors. Digital sketches are still hand-drawn, but emailed to guests the next day. I also provide a link for guests to be able to purchase a physical print to be shipped to them if they’d like to order one. I can sketch at the same pace for both mediums, so the preference is really up to you and what will work best for your event!

4. What event can I hire an artist for?

If you don’t choose to have an artist at your wedding, most couples have a few events aside from the big day. This includes bridal showers, engagement parties, rehearsal dinner or welcome party, bachelor/bachelorettes, and day after brunch. All of these are a perfect opportunity to wow your guests with a fun and unique favor for them to remember your special day or weekend.

5. How does it all work?

I can’t speak for other artists, but this is how I do it:

  • I arrive at the venue 30 minutes prior to set up

  • When someone wants an illustration, I have them put their name/email on a sign up sheet

  • After they sign in, I take a photo of them (so they don’t have to wait around and can enjoy the event)

  • I complete the sketch in the order on that’s on the list

  • They come pick it up at the end of the night, or if the sketches are digital I will email it to them the next day

  • If the couple/client chooses overtime, the guest will receive it after the event

6. You mentioned overtime, what is that?

I can only sketch so many people in the designated hours, so once my sign up sheet is full, I will cut the list off for the rest of the time that I’m there. Some quotes may include a limited amount of overtime. If the couple decides they’d like more guests to get drawn, they can pay a per sketch rate or have me stay additional hours. I will complete overtime illustrations after the wedding and ship it to the couple within a week or two from the invoice payment (US addresses only). All sketches will have guests’ names on them for reference.

Pro tip: put the overtime sketches in your thank you notes for distribution!

7. how long does this all take?

For individual guest sketches, most artists work at relatively the same pace which is 5-15 minutes per illustration depending on how many people are in the sketch and how intense their outfits are to draw. This works out to around 6-8 people (or 3-4 couples) per hour. For this reason, I do recommend hiring more than 1 illustrator if you’re having over 75 guests.

For a full scene illustration, it usually takes a minimum of 5-6 hours or more depending on the size and intensity. Some artists will finish by the end of the night and some will complete it post-wedding and work off a photo.

Hiring a live illustrator is the perfect way to memorialize your special day. Regardless if they’re sketching individuals or a big scene, your guests will love to watch the process and remember it for years to come. If you choose to have guest sketches, they’ll be leaving the wedding with a favor that they truly love, as it was made JUST for them. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Interested in live illustration? Click here to fill out the form and I can send you a quote! I will travel to wherever your event is (I love to travel!), however, please be aware that anywhere outside of Boston, DC, and NYC will have additional travel fees.

Samantha is an incredibly talented artist! I was lucky enough to have Samantha at my wedding in Red Bank, NJ for live illustration for my guests and she was fantastic! 10 Ideas for Creative Escort Cards

wedding escort card

So much time is spent in the last few days leading up to the wedding trying to decide who will be at what table. Opinions will be coming from everywhere, and the final atmosphere of your wedding will all be dependent on making sure the right group of people are sat together for dinner.

You don’t want to put all of that hard work to waste if no one can figure out where they are supposed to be! Having an escort card wall/table will make it fun and functional for your guests to find their seats so we put together 10 ideas to make sure the escort wall is one to remember:

1. A drinks wall

Champagne, mini margs, either in a salted shot glass or mini patron bottle with straw, any other drink that goes with the theme: this is a fun way to get the party started and set the tone of the reception.

2. Moscow mule mugs

They can fill them up at the bar or take them home to make their own cocktails!

3. Mini records

Show your mutual love of music by putting your guests’ names on a record with their table number. Chances are that most of the selfies will be taken with this wall as their background!

4. Paper flowers

Use these to really anchor your color scheme and create a statement piece in the wedding.

5. Plants/flowers in mini vases

If flowers are important to you, this is the perfect way to share that love with each of your guests. Get their names calligraphed on the vases!

6. Boarding passes

All aboard the love story that is the reason everyone has gathered. This would be especially great for a destination wedding or one with a travel theme.

7. Fortune cookies

Your fortune will obviously be bright on your wedding day, so share that positivity with your guests (and give them a little snack at the same time!)

8. Food table/wall

Donuts, cupcakes, cheese, lemons, etc: anything edible is always a hit in group events. It will also keep everyone occupied while you and your newly beloved take any last minute photos.

9. Mini charcuterie boards/boxes/cones

To be saved for midnight snacks back at the hotel after a long night of dancing at the reception!

10. Bookmarks

A little token of your passion for reading can both help your guests to find their seats as well as hold their spot in the next book that desperately don’t want to put down.

Keep in mind that many of these options can double as wedding favors! We love a multi purpose wedding element. Use the escort card wall as a statement piece in your wedding decor.

Unique Wedding Favors

wedding favors

One of the core traditions in a wedding is handing out favors at the end of the night. If that sentence alone doesn’t trigger a memory of pastel Jordan Almonds, have you even been to a wedding??

There are beautiful meanings behind this traditional treat, but it does now feel slightly over done and old fashioned. Today we want to share some updated and modern favor options that your wedding guests would actually be excited to bring home with them.

Polaroid photos

Set up a photo area with Polaroid cameras and let your guests go wild. They will love being able to go home with something to keep the memories alive with their fellow guests

Assorted candies

Set up a mini candy shop at your reception and let’s your guests fill up their own bags to bring home. No matter how old the guest, everyone will be reliving their childhood dreams all over again

Shop local

Support a small business by buying and sharing their product as your wedding favors. This could be local honey,  pastries, soap, books, olive oil, the list goes on. For holidays it can be ornaments or hot chocolate mix

Go green

A popular choice nowadays is mini plants (or seeds)! Whether you choose succulents, air plants, or cacti, most guests (who aren’t plant killers like me) would love to add more green to their collection

For the winter couples

Send your guests home with a cosy blanket! Doubles as a useful wedding accessory if your ceremony is outside during the colder months. Personalize the wrapping with a custom ribbon or artsy paper

Let’s be honest here. The fastest way into anyone’s heart is through their stomach. Your guests will probably be happier leaving with a midnight snack than they would ever be with a koozie that has your wedding date printed on it

Most importantly, if you choose to do wedding favors, just make sure that they represent who you are as a couple!

Tips for Planning a Destination Wedding

destination wedding planning

I’m probably one of the few people who look forward to destination weddings. I love to travel and usually just see it as an opportunity to go somewhere new and appreciate that I have friends who think the same way.

For the couple though, planning a wedding IN town can already be overwhelming so many don’t even want to consider elsewhere. Well, friends, it doesn’t have to be that way as long as you’re organized. First of all, you should be hiring a planner (we talked about that in a previous post) but I’ve also recruited destination planner Gabby Pinkerton from ‘Cause We Can Events to give ya’ll a few things to consider when you’re starting to plan your destination wedding:

  1. Marriage licenses

Getting a marriage license in another country can be really hard! I always recommend having a legal ceremony back home and doing a fun ceremony abroad. If you don't want to tell your friends and family that it's not actually the "real ceremony" have your officiant bring their own made up marriage certificate. No one needs to know!

2. Plan for wrinkled clothing

I like to bring a portable steamer to help steam the wrinkles out of your dress, tux, jumpsuit, you name it!

3. Tipping protocol

Not every country tips (and some even consider it an insult)! Read up on local and cultural best practices when it comes to tipping your vendors. This also applies in the general sense that your country of choice should match your personal preferences

4. Sim cards and cell phone plans

Your current cell phone plan may not work abroad. Be sure to call your provider before leaving to choose a plan that works best for you for contacting your vendors and keeping guests in the loop. I also like to download WhatsApp so that I can "text" vendors over wifi instead of through my phone provider. It's free!

Gabby and her team are based in Nashville and are a full service wedding planning company. But they’re more than that, they’re here to make your adventurous wedding dreams come true. They keep it personal and unique to you and your S.O. (there’s a reason I like them so much!) so check them out at www.causewecanevents.com and view all the gorgeous photos on Instagram @causewecanevents.

Happy Planning!

Ideas for Wedding Entertainment

wedding entertainment

When it comes to wedding entertainment the first thing that comes to mind is usually the decision between a DJ or a band, but what else could you include in your wedding that would keep guests guessing about what else you might have up your sleeve on your big day? Right now one of the biggest trends in weddings is the idea of going against tradition. If you have some extra room in your budget (maybe because you decided to have a fabulous micro wedding rather than a 200 person event), you should consider throwing something a little different into your reception to spicy things up. We promise not to tell anyone if you take an idea or two from us and make it your own 😉

1. Dance instructor

If you know that your group is always down for a spin on the dance floor, why not surprise everyone with a professional dance instructor to clean up their moves just a bit? This could be salsa dancing, maybe a traditional dance to promote your culture, or go crazy with a hip hop lesson. Everyone could learn something new and have fun while doing it!

2. Professional artist

Pick your medium of choice and then hire a professional for a few hours to come and live sketch, paint, or draw your reception or guests. You would leave with a lasting memory of the evening that is separate from the photographer and/or videographer and each of your guests could have a personal memory of themselves.

Interested in live illustration?  Check out my services here!

3. Mini Golf

This isn’t your sibling’s corn hole set (still a favorite yard game). Step it up a notch and take over any open green space with strategically placed mini golf courses! Multiple holes also means a few groups of people can play at once and clean up is simple. Golf competition anyone?

4. Bouncy House

This option certainly isn’t for everyone, but for those of us that are still a kid at heart (or need a break from dancing), having a beautiful white bouncy house is so much fun! Bonus: it’s great for any actual children that might be at your reception.

5. Snacks!

Ok this might not seem like your typical entertainment source, but can you tell me the last time someone brought out snacks and everyone in the room didn’t get excited?! One of our favorite ways to end a long night of dancing is with a late night snack, so why not just incorporate that into the timeline? About an hour before the DJ plays his final song, have munchies passed around. This could be French fries, milk and cookies, popcorn, or literally anything that you would want when you left after a long (but fun) night.

Now, we aren’t trying to plan your wedding for you, but we are saying that any or all of these ideas could be mixed and matched to create the perfect wedding reception! And if you decide to include them just know that we would like to be included in the guest count because it sounds like you sure know how to have a fun time!

Are you planning any fun surprises for your guests that we haven’t thought of yet??

Perks of Micro Weddings

micro weddings

Just about a year ago we wrote our first blog post about micro weddings. Before that we had never put the two ideas together besides just for elopements. Now that traditional weddings are a possibility in the near future, many brides are still opting for a micro size because they realize it fits their needs more than a large wedding. If you’re on the fence about which direction to go, we wanted to share some of the perks of doing a micro wedding that can’t happen for a traditional wedding (hint: it revolves around quality)

1. You can actually spend time with all of your guests

If you have 250 people at your wedding you will either spend the entire reception saying hi to every person for one minute at a time, or you will eat, drink, and party, and not see anyone at all

2. Better food!

If you’re only feeding 20 people instead of 200 it’s easier and more cost effective to get a better quality meal for you and your guests. Plus you have more of an opportunity to get the exact menu you want

3. Go family style

If you only have a handful of people you can have one long family style table rather than many smaller tables. This will mean one set of (quality) decorations where you can go all out rather than distributing decor throughout a huge venue

4. The venue can be all you

You are no longer stuck with a hotel ball room or reception hall with bad carpet and white walls. With a smaller guest count you can take them to your favorite restaurant or rooftop, museum, or cute garden in your neighborhood. Let your personality shine through from the moment your guests step foot into your ceremony and reception

5. Create an experience, not just an oversized dinner and ceremony service

If you are working around less people, you can make your wedding into a full weekend experience if you want to (hello destination locations!). Cancel any of the old school traditions that don’t feel like you and your partner, and create the wedding that represents your future marriage to its fullest.  This could be through elaborate table cards or escort walls, personalized gifts, or entertainment!

All any of this really means is that you can control any part of your wedding to be exactly what you want, not just what is expected of you. Also, think of all of the money you would save overall with a micro wedding!! That is a huge perk, but we wanted to focus on the more fun side of wedding planning. If you are doing a micro wedding, what was the most exciting part of planning it? Let us know in the comments!

Alternative Bridal Showers

alternative bridal shower

As we talked about the topic of bridal showers, we both agreed that we no longer care for any of the traditional events. That means today we are sharing with you the bridal showers we’d want to attend! The number one rule of all of these events is that there will not be toilet paper wrapped around the bride for any reason.

  1. Dinner at your favorite restaurant

Why make your future mother-in-law stress about making sure her living room is fixed up, and that there are enough snacks for the whole crowd when you could host the girls in the comfort of your favorite restaurant?! If it’s a smaller restaurant you can probably even rent out the whole place for the afternoon. This will make for a much more laid back atmosphere and will allow the host to enjoy the day as much as the guests.

  2. Signature cocktail tasting for the wedding

Have your whole crew come over for a day of cocktail tasting! This could be how you choose the perfect combo for your signature cocktails at your wedding. You could even serve some of the appetizers that will be presented at your cocktail hour as a glimpse of what’s to come!

  3. Crafting day

If your group is crafty, break out the Cricut and put them to work! You could have a fun day while also being productive, and anyone participating will feel proud to see their hard work on display at your wedding. Think welcome signs, signature cocktail signs, seating chart... the options are endless.

  4. “Build your bar cart” party

This idea was stolen from TikTok and we’ve been waiting for an excuse to use it! If you are a younger couple (but still over 21) that is still establishing your home together, you can throw a build-your-bar-cart party! Everyone attending will bring something like a shaker, mixers, or just liquor bottles and get you ready for any future hosting you do. Feel free to also dig into the goods and have your friends and family show you their favorite cocktails so you feel fancy when trying to impress your next guests.

  5. Backyard BBQ

Why make things complicated when you can relax and enjoy the day? A BBQ would be a great way to get the men and kids involved too. Have a few people in charge of manning the grill for the day, put some side dishes and drinks on a table and enjoy the day playing cornhole and horseshoe while chatting about wedding plans and honeymoon excursions.

Keep in mind, this is your wedding and your pre-wedding event. Make sure that whatever you are planning feels most like you. Rules and traditions are meant to be broken! Any of these events could even make for fun Spring and Summer activities, engaged or not.

Ways to Customize Your Wedding

save the dates

If any of you have also been living on Bridal TikTok these last few months, your head is also spinning with ideas for your wedding! Besides learning how to politely tell your guests to leave their little ones at home, and how to save money (but absolutely not time) by making all of the floral decor yourself, we have also learned how to step out of the expected to make your wedding day memorable for you and your guests.

  1. Welcome surprises!

We all know that weddings never start exactly on time, which means that guests are usually left empty handed and mingling with strangers, unsure of what to do or where to stand. On Instagram we saw a recommendation to have guests put their drink of choice with their RSVP so that they could be handed a cocktail (or mocktail) upon arrival. GENIUS!! You could even have a little charcuterie board ready for guests to snack on while they are waiting for you to get all of the final touches taken care of without being rushed

2. Ceremony backdrop!

The background of where you say “I DO” is a place for countless customization options. This could be a wall of flowers, a photo backdrop, a metal arch with flowers and greenery placed strategically. Just having your officiant and a few flower arrangements behind you is a thing of the past. Choose a backdrop that will represent who you are as a couple (and what type of decor you will decorate your house with because these pictures will be hanging on your walls forever). This is also an amazing way to bring in small businesses to your wedding day! This may feel like 1 of the million decisions you have to make, but to whoever you hire to create this backdrop, this will be their main focus. Hire a professional if you want it to be memorable!

3. Photo ops!

We all love a photo booth, but sometimes they can give us flack backs to our awkward prom date or a children's birthday party. Make your guests’ photos Instagram worthy by commissioning a custom photo background! This could be a huge floral backdrop, a sketch of you and your fiancé so it feels like you in every picture, or even just a print that is inspired by your other stationary. Your guests will line up all night to get a picture with the perfect background and lighting, so don’t forget a ring light to make sure they look amazing. Click here to order yours!

4. Your gown!

Even your wedding gown can be customized from head to toe if you are willing to put in the trust and imagination that it would require! If that sounds like a lot, you also have options of customizing dresses that you order from bridal salons. Some designers have customizing options when ordering like lining/unlined, extending/shortening the train, adding/removing sleeves. If the designer can’t make changes when creating the dress, there are also a lot of customization options that can happen in alterations. A tailor can build up a dress to make it more modest by ordering extra elements from the original dress, they can lower the back of the dress to show off your curves even better, or they can add beading to make the whole dress shine under the lights of your reception. You could even have a veil custom made to match your gown! Just keep in mind the changes that you want to make when considering your budget for your dream dress!

What are you going to have customized to make your big day special?? Let us know below!

Wedding Guest Book Alternatives

guest book alternatives

Guest books feel so 1990’s, don’t they?

What are you supposed to do with a book filled with signatures?

We put together a list of fun ways to remember who all came to your wedding! These ideas will allow your guests to be a part of your everyday life in unique ways. We won’t judge if you decided to do a few of these on your big day

1. SamiaLynn Illustration

Have a large custom print ready for every guest to sign around the illustration. Once the wedding is over you can frame and hang in your house! Link here for the bridal shower version

2. Connect 4

Get a large game of Connect 4 and have guests sign one of the pieces. This will be something you pull out every game night and will remind you of each person at the wedding as you play. (If Connect 4 isn’t your jam you can do the same thing with Jenga!)

3. Cards Against Humanity

If you have a creative crowd they will love filling out blank Cards Against Humanity cards for you to play for years to come. Think of all the inside jokes and memories that your guests could come up with!

4. Date Jar

Have each guest fill out a card with their best date night idea and now you don’t have to think about unique date night ideas for your first year of marriage! Once a week or a month you and your hubby/wifey can randomly select a card and that will be your fun/romantic date

5. Globe

Instead of a book that gets hidden away, have your guests sign a globe, pointing to places that they suggest you travel to. This is especially fun for the world traveler couple

6. An oversized bottle of wine

Need I say more???

7. Recipe book

Have each guest share their favorite recipe on an index card as well as sign their name and leave a note on the back

Have another creative idea? Let us know!

Bridal Shower Games You'll Actually WANT to Play

bridal shower games

So you were titled Maid Of Honor?

It is now your duty to plan the bridal shower. This comes with the responsibility of choosing the bridal shower games. First thing’s first- if you pull out a roll of toilet paper to trick the guests into mocking up wedding dresses made out of two ply, you will see eyes glazing over before the food is served.

We have looked deep into the depths of the history of bridal shower games and came out with the best of the worst options for your prenuptial celebrations!

1. Flower arranging

Get dollar store vases and grocery store fresh flowers and have the girls create their own bouquet. This will also be the decor at the party that will essentially clean itself up as people leave.

2. The couple likes to cook? Fill out recipe cards

Have each person at the wedding fill out a card with their favorite recipe which will then create a book of meals for the newlywed couple

3. Wine tasting

Get creative with your choices of wine. Maybe one from every place the bride and groom have visited, or where they are from. Or just ask the helpful clerks at Trader Joe’s for their favorites. You could even use the bottles first for the garter toss.

4. Garter toss

Set up bottles of your choosing (we vote wine bottles, but this could also be sparkling cider) and have each guest take turns tossing the garter, trying to hook a bottle. Whoever rings the most bottles wins the bottle or another prize!

5. Heads up- bridal addition!

This could include everything from Wedding Gown to the Bridesmaid movie. We vote that you have to drink every time you lose a round!

6. Hidden gems

There will be hidden gems around the party and as they are found the person who spotted it first gets a prize or just a fresh glass of champagne

7. The “what’s in your phone” game

Get up close and personal with the guests to find out what’s really hidden beneath their passcodes. This can be as scandalous as you want to make it! Last (wo)man standing (with the most unique phone finds) wins.

8. Write my vows

Have either groups or individuals write the bride’s vows. They will be read in front of the group and the most creative/fun wins a prize.

Have fun!

How to Pull off a Multi-Cultural Wedding

Blog_Post_3.png

As people are traveling and migrating more than ever before, many of us (myself included) find ourselves in relationships with people from outside our nationality and/or culture. Usually, it’s great! You get to learn about new holidays, languages, try new foods, and maybe even get to visit their country.

Then comes the wedding planning

And the wedding stress, but not just any wedding stress. No, you are now tasked with having to combine traditions, foods, and (sometimes) ceremonies. It can be done and it will be amazing, but maybe you’ll need a little guidance in balancing your family’s desire to serve an entire roasted lamb with your in-laws vegetarian preferences.

Meet Christine Godsey, founder of CG & Co Events and specialist on multicultural weddings. She’s been planning these events in the DC area for 12 years (and BEAUTIFULLY, I might add) so, I’ve combined our top tips for pulling off an amazing, blended wedding:

1. Let’s start off with the most important one: This is YOUR wedding. Keep in mind the traditions and beliefs you hold as a couple, because those are the ones that come first.

Yes, you don’t want to upset your family. Yes, most of the time they’re the ones paying for it. But most of all, they want you to be happy. So before you read the rest of the list, remember that the most important people of the day are you and your fiance, and it’s about your union whatever that looks like.

2. Think about traditions that have a special meaning to you or your family

Just because you or your parents (or grandparents) came from a certain place or religion, doesn’t mean every aspect has to make an appearance at your wedding. Really narrow down the things that are important to you and it’ll be much easier to incorporate.

3. Be sure to ask your parents what is important to them, 9 times out of 10 they will certainly feel strongly about including certain traditions into your ceremony

Most of the time, you will end up compromising a little to make your parents happy. However, many of the traditions your parents will insist on will have to do with the ceremony. Have them make a list so you can go over it together and discuss what will actually be a part of your day.

4. Get creative with fusion foods, music, performances to highlight both cultures

The best part of multicultural weddings! Find a caterer that can put a custom menu together using key flavors or dishes from both cultures. Maybe your first dance song can be your choice and a traditional dance performance can be done for your fiance’s side. Really play around with these aspects to make your reception the best of both worlds.

5. Check with the parents of your fiance to learn about any religious dietary (vegan, vegetarian, jain, kosher, halal, etc) or alcohol restrictions. If these are not addressed early it could unnecessarily offend guests

Whether it’s through extremely clear buffet labeling, strategically placed bars, or making sure the vegetarian option is gluten free, it’s definitely important to go over this one early. Food is the center of many cultures and the last thing you want on your wedding day is upset guests.

6. Sometimes, the only compromise is to do everything

If you have the means, don't feel bad about doing 2 different ceremonies or 1 extended ceremony to incorporate all of the elements for both traditions. Some people serve one cuisine at the rehearsal dinner and the other at the reception. Others will have the main wedding in one country and a small ceremony in another. It’s completely normal in some cultures for wedding celebrations to span across multiple days and a variety of events.

7. Everyone, yes everyone, will have an opinion about what you should do so be prepared to stand firm in some areas.  It helps to have a planner for these types of situations

Please refer back to tip #1 on who’s opinion is the most important. If you’re having trouble, a planner is a great 3rd party to have. They’re amazing at blending your traditions and preferences the best way possible, but they’re also the best mediator when it comes to sorting out details.

Get in touch with Christine at www.cgandcoevents.com and be sure to check out all her beautiful events on Instagram @cgandcoevents for a little wedding inspo.

Happy planning!

Top 10 Wedding Movies to Binge in Quarantine

Bride watching wedding movies while eating cake and drinking champagne

As social lives are currently on pause (and we won’t even talk about the status of weddings right now), one thing that everyone can do is binge watch movies. We have formulated a list of our favorite wedding related movies for you to watch to remind yourself that your wedding planning could be going much worse… Just beware, any of these movies that don’t make you burst out laughing will make you cry, so grab that extra roll of toilet paper you stocked up on and get ready for the water works that we’ve all been trying to hold in for over a month now.

This is also a great way to gather all of your bridesmaids for a virtual girls night in and you can all pick a movie to watch together either over a Zoom/ FaceTime call or even just a group chat. Pour a glass of wine and pop a bowl of popcorn and you will simultaneously be living your best life and doing your part to keep your loved ones healthy! This is also a great excuse to put on one of the cute loungewear sets you have impulse purchased since being stuck at home. Why not look cute for your girls night in??
